About Hveradalir and Mudbath

Hveradalir is a high-temperature geothermal area located within the Hengill volcanic system in South Iceland, just 20 minutes from Reykjavík. Known for mineral-rich mud, natural steam vents and volcanic landscapes, the area combines geological significance with a long-standing Icelandic bathing tradition.

Mudbath – A Small, Family-Run Geothermal Experience

Mudbath is a small, family-run geothermal bathing experience located in Hveradalir, Iceland. Our mud pots are naturally fed by mineral-rich hot springs flowing directly from deep within the earth, offering a simple and authentic wellness experience rooted in Icelandic nature.

We believe in keeping things natural, honest and accessible. The mud baths are free to use, and we operate on trust and mutual respect. Guests are asked to shower before bathing, treat the area with care, and enjoy the experience responsibly.

A Geothermal Tradition Since 1938

Hveradalir has been associated with geothermal bathing for decades. In 1938, one of Iceland’s earliest steam bathhouses was built here, using natural spring steam directly from the ground. Contemporary newspaper reports described it as an innovative health experiment, speculating whether geothermal areas like Hveradalir could become health resorts in the future.

That early vision of geothermal wellness still echoes today — a belief in the restorative power of natural steam, mineral mud and fresh Icelandic air.

Geothermal Mud & Natural Conditions

The geothermal mud at Hveradalir has been tested and is known for its skin-supporting mineral properties. As with all natural geothermal environments, conditions may vary depending on weather, underground pressure and geothermal activity. This dynamic quality is part of what makes the experience unique and authentic.

Preserving a Living Volcanic Landscape

Hveradalir lies within an active geothermal zone shaped by underground heat rising from magma deep below the surface. Steam, sulphur deposits and mineral-rich fluids continuously shape the terrain. We are gradually building and improving facilities as time and resources allow, while respecting the delicate volcanic ecosystem.

Thank you for supporting a small local business and for helping us preserve this unique geothermal area for everyone to enjoy.

Relax. Breathe deep. Let the earth do the rest.
