HENGILL VOLCANIC SYSTEM · SOUTH ICELAND

Mount Hengill

A powerful volcanic mountain at the heart of the Hengill geothermal system, offering panoramic hiking trails and dramatic South Iceland landscapes.

Mount Hengill – Volcanic Landscapes, Geothermal Power & Panoramic Hiking

Mount Hengill (803 m) is one of South Iceland’s most significant volcanic mountains, forming the core of the Hengill volcanic system between Þingvellir National Park and Hveragerði. Shaped by centuries of geothermal activity, the area is defined by steaming valleys, lava fields, fumaroles and mineral-rich hot springs.

Hengill is not only a natural landmark but also a key part of Iceland’s renewable energy infrastructure. The nearby Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Station harnesses geothermal energy from deep beneath the volcanic system, making Hengill both a geological and technological highlight of the region.

For visitors, Mount Hengill offers a complete outdoor experience. A network of marked hiking trails leads through rugged volcanic terrain, across colorful rhyolite hills and up panoramic ridgelines. From higher elevations, hikers enjoy sweeping views over South Iceland, Lake Þingvallavatn, the Atlantic coastline and, on clear days, toward Reykjavík.

A Perfect Combination with Hveradalir Geothermal Area

Located at the foot of Mount Hengill, Hveradalir Geothermal Area provides easy access to the same volcanic landscape — without the longer mountain ascent. After exploring Hengill’s hiking trails, visitors can continue their geothermal experience at Hveradalir and relax in the natural surroundings.

Hveradalir is also home to mineral-rich mud baths, offering a unique opportunity to experience Iceland’s geothermal energy firsthand. The area features a designated parking area (small service fee applies) and on-site WC facilities, making it a convenient and comfortable base for exploring the Hengill region.

Combining Mount Hengill’s dramatic volcanic scenery with a visit to Hveradalir Mud Baths creates a well-rounded South Iceland experience — from high mountain ridges and geothermal valleys to accessible relaxation in natural surroundings.
