Accessibility at Hveradalir Geothermal Area
Easy to reach from Reykjavík
Hveradalir Geothermal Area is easy to visit and easy to enjoy. Located just 20 minutes from central Reykjavík, it is a convenient stop for anyone wanting to experience an active geothermal landscape without a long journey. A spacious parking area makes arrival simple, and there is a toilet at the car park for added comfort before or after your walk.
Safe paths through the geothermal area
One of the strongest features of Hveradalir is the access through the area itself. Elevated walking paths lead visitors safely into the steaming geothermal valley, making it possible to experience the landscape up close while helping protect the fragile ground below. The paths are stable, clearly defined and designed to make the area more accessible for a wide range of visitors.
Wheelchair-friendly design
Hveradalir is also wheelchair accessible, making it a rare opportunity to explore a geothermal area in a more inclusive and comfortable way. The paths have a flat, anti-slip surface, and viewing platforms along the route make it easier to pause, take in the scenery and enjoy the atmosphere at your own pace.
Information along the way
As you move through the area, information panels help tell the story of Hveradalir. They explain the geothermal activity, the hot springs, the landscape and the history of the site, giving visitors a deeper understanding of what they are seeing without needing a guide. This makes the walk both visually impressive and informative.
Facilities by the trailhead
The experience is especially convenient because the Hveradalir Mud Bath is located right by the parking area and the ski lodge. After exploring the geothermal area on foot, visitors can continue straight into a warm and relaxing mud bath experience, enjoying geothermal heat and mineral-rich volcanic mud in one of the most unique settings in South Iceland.
Award-winning access and design
Hveradalir received the Icelandic Tourist Board Environmental Award 2022 for the project “Walkways through the geothermal area – access for all.” The award recognized the thoughtful design of the floating, self-supporting aluminium walkways, which minimize contact with the ground and help protect the sensitive geothermal landscape while guiding visitors safely through the area.
The project also improved both safety and accessibility. According to the award announcement, the walkways were designed with universal access in mind, with a smooth surface, wider passing and turning areas at selected points, more handrails, improved lighting and informative signs about the geothermal area and its history. Together, these features make Hveradalir easier to experience for more people, all year round.
Whether you come for a short stop, a gentle walk or a slower visit with time to read the signs and enjoy the views, Hveradalir offers excellent access, strong on-site facilities and a memorable way to experience Iceland’s geothermal nature.
